Winning entry: The Mystery of the Atom

Congratulations to our 2024 winner, David from Chellaston Academy. David created a time capsule containing letters from eight of the most important physicists who helped us understand the atom . Take a look at his entry and cover letter.

Science is my passion because it can explain all the amazing mysteries around us. When I was younger, I learned about the universe, and my brain created even more questions. I started to think about how people discovered those things.
For this competition, I created a time capsule. Inside this box, you’ll find letters from eight of the most important physicists who helped us understand the atom. Each letter explains what they discovered and invites you to do fun activities to understand their work better. This way, you become part of the team that discovered the atom.
Democritus will guide you to cut bread into smaller pieces until you reach something too tiny to cut. J.J. Thomson shares a plum pudding recipe similar to his atomic model. Ernest Rutherford will ask you to throw some marbles to illustrate his gold foil experiment, and James Chadwick will ask you to inflate a balloon to demonstrate his discovery of the neutron.
The box also has cards with pictures of these physicists for playing a “timeline game” and a different set of cards for a “memory game”.
Are you ready to solve the mystery of the atom? And remember, Physics is Fun.
