Runner up: Using physics to solve the mystery behind the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370

Congratulations to our 2024 runner-up, Charlotte and Hafsa from Cheadle Hulme School. Charlotte and Hafsa co-authored a book investigating (and debunking) some of the more popular theories behind the disappearance of MH370. Take a look at their entry below: 

One of the greatest unsolved mysteries is the disappearance of MH370. 2024 marks 10 years since the plane vanished, and as keen physicists, theorists and overall mystery enthusiasts, we have embarked on the journey to give our own interpretation of what happened, compiling our findings into a book.

We investigated some of the more popular theories behind the disappearance, using our physics knowledge and research skills to debunk or prove each one. We then evaluated our research and decided which was most feasible. By doing so, we came to a conclusion about which theory most likely is true, However, noticing that the theories discusses would have to rely on each other, we compiled them together into one theory, addressing all the questions which a single theory fails to answer.

In addition, we also wanted to look at what is currently happening in the investigation, hence researching the search for the black box. We looked at the methods used for its detection, using physics to explain how and why this is so important to the search.
